Thoughs for Cello

2012

Program Notes

Thoughts for Cello was commissioned by a friend of mine, Kayla Herrmann. When composing this piece I decided not to focus directly on program to create a formal structure. Instead, I chose relatively simple forms and packaged them into a 6 movement suite. Each movement was sketched and composed relatively quickly then edited at a later date. The titles of each movement do not reflect their meaning, rather they reflect the current events in my life at the time of writing. At 7am After Staying Up Past 2am is not about fatigue, it is the condition in which I wrote the movement. After a Run is not about running, rather it was written after I went on a run. Perhaps subconscious elements tie the musical character of each movement to my emotional state at the time of composition. Titles such as these might affect the perception of the instrumentalists and the audience. Anyways, it's just a 'thought'.
